COME FROM AWAY

I moved to Maui on September 8, 2001, three days before 9/11. So, it was such a meaningful experience to work on Come From Away at Maui OnStage. The original costume design by Toni-Leslie James was nothing short of brilliant. She had created a look that was deceptively simple, yet masterfully constructed to support rapid character changes while making it seem as though the actors weren’t wearing “costumes” at all. She once said it was one of the hardest shows she had ever designed. Her work was so precise, so thoughtful, and so effective that I didn’t want to make any major changes to her vision. It was perfect. As the Costume Director, I pulled together all the pieces and worked to realize her vision as faithfully as possible. I was also grateful to the volunteers from The Sewing Hui, who assisted with alterations to ensure everything fit beautifully for our actors.
